How We Got Here: A Quick Timeline

By October 6, the program had an official name and Odyssey was announced as the implementation partner. Final rules followed on November 25, and by December, private schools and service providers were signing up in droves: 600 schools and 200 service providers had joined by December 22.

Applications open (early 2026). When the family application window opened on February 4, the response was immediate: 8,000 families applied within the first hour, and 42,000 by the end of day one. Applications kept climbing, surpassing 100,000 by February 16 and 200,000 by March 16. A federal court order pushed the original deadline back from March 17 to March 31, and when the window finally closed, more than 274,000 students had applied statewide.

Awards go out (spring 2026). The state prioritized students by tier. Tier 1 (students with disabilities and their siblings) received the first round of awards, 42,600 in total, between April 22 and 24. A random lottery the following week set award priority and waitlist order for everyone else, and by early May, more than 53,000 Tier 2 students (households at or below 200% of the federal poverty line) had been awarded funding.

Waitlist movement and confirmations (May–June 2026). As some awarded families opted out, their funding freed up spots for waitlisted students. Throughout May and June, thousands more students moved off the waitlist in several rounds, pushing the total number of awarded students past 100,000 by June 10.

Where Things Stand Now

As of this writing, the program has moved from the awards phase into the funding phase. Nearly 73,000 students who completed their enrollment confirmations by mid-June are set to receive their initial funding on July 1, when the TEFA Marketplace also officially opens. Families who have been awarded but haven't yet confirmed their school choice have until July 15 to opt in and select a private school or homeschool/other setting to lock in funding for the coming school year. Looking further ahead, private school students are scheduled to receive additional funding installments in October 2026 and February 2027.
