Navigating the Texas TEFA school voucher application can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks down eligibility, funding options, timelines, and key decisions so parents can move forward with confidence and clarity.

The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program represents a historic opportunity for Texas families to access educational choices that align with their values and their children's unique needs. Starting in the 2026-27 school year, eligible families can receive state funding to support private school tuition, homeschooling expenses, tutoring, educational therapy, and other approved educational services.

If you're wondering whether your family qualifies, how much funding you might receive, or how to navigate the application process, you're in the right place.

TEFA Application Timeline for Parents: Key Dates and Deadlines (2026–27)

Mark your calendars now!

The parent application window opens February 4, 2026 and closes March 17, 2026. Unlike vendor applications (which are accepted on a rolling basis), this is your only opportunity to apply for the 2026-27 school year. After applying, you'll receive funding notifications starting in early April 2026, with funds disbursed in three phases throughout the school year.

TEFA Eligibility Requirements for Texas Families

To qualify for TEFA, your child must be:

  • A U.S. citizen, national, or lawfully admitted to the U.S.

  • A Texas resident

  • Eligible to attend a Texas public or charter school (including pre-K or kindergarten)

Children ages 3-5 have additional eligibility pathways, including being unable to speak English, being part of a military family, or being in foster care.

How Much TEFA Funding Parents Can Receive (Private School, Disability, Homeschool)

The amount depends on your child's educational setting:

  • Private School Students: $10,474 for the 2026-27 school year

  • Students with Disabilities (with a public school IEP on file): Up to $30,000

  • Homeschooled Students or Students in Non-Participating Private Schools: $2,000 annually
